Banks are also officially referred to as Financial Institutions. As a Nigerian business person or entrepreneur, one of your biggest resources will be a bank. A bank helps you to secure, transfer and invest your funds. We understand how crucial it is to know your bank and that is why we have compiled this comprehensive list. This is the most complete list of banks in Nigeria, and you won’t get this anywhere else.
Ideally, you should know the name, the website, and the customer care number of your bank. Getting yourself equipped with all this information is going to make your banking life a bit easier because there are times things might go wrong and you need to immediately contact your bank. For example, when you lose access to your debit card and you need to block it immediately.
We have even gone a little bit further to help you categorize these banks into different categories.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is the apex financial institution of the federation. It governs and regulates the banking industry in Nigeria. Under Charles Soludo, the CBN carried out many reforms, one of them being the recapitalization of the banking industry in the year 2005.
We currently have over 40 licensed banks in Nigeria. At a point, there were up to 89 banks in Nigeria until the consolidation of the banking industry following an official order on July 6, 2004, by the then Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
It is safe to bank in all the banks in Nigeria listed above, as they are all licensed by the CBN, and your funds are insured by the NDIC (or Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation). The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation was created in 1988 to protect depositors and guarantee payment of insured funds in the event of failure of insured institutions.
That means even if the banks go bankrupt, your money would be intact.
