As a miner, getting the best operating system for your mining is one of the best things you can do for yourself. When you take a look at everything that you will have to go through including overheating, updating systems and devices, and a host of other things then you won’t be shy to go after what works best for you.

Windows vs HiveOS
Windows vs Hive OS

Since the Hive OS has been publicly made available in November 2019, several miners have switched to the operating system while others aren’t too sure about how it can benefit their mining business compared to Windows. In this post, we will be taking a look at these two operating systems and highlighting what makes them different from each other.

What is Hive OS?

Hive OS is a Linux-based operating system that allows users to set up and effectively control their rigs hassle-free. It is specifically designed and optimized for mining cryptocurrencies. It allows you to manage as many miners as possible using just a single account dashboard. You can also remotely monitor your rigs, update and fine-tune your workers, change your mining software, and a lot of things.

An overview of the Hive OS Dashboard

Hive OS gives its users a freemium operating system to work with. The Hive OS system supports mining on ASICS, GPU Rigs, and CPUs. It does not only has its own pool, but it can also support as many different pools as possible where you can mine ETH and ETC.

The Hive OS has a lot of great features that makes it very easy to use and manage your rigs. Some of them include;

Temperature Watchdog

This feature works effectively for regulating the temperature of your Hive OS. when the temperature gets too high, this temperature Watchdog feature will automatically reboot the system or stop the mining process altogether. With this, you can protect your workers from overheating and you do not have to lose income due to problems that can arise from this.

Schedules

The schedule feature ensures that you can automate certain actions and processes. For example, you can schedule your workers to switch from overclocking to downvolting and other important things that you might not be able to do immediately on your account. With the schedule features, these actions are continuously performed with or without your participation.

Autofan

The autofan features helps you to control the fans of all your workers automatically. This way you can regulate the temperature of your devices at the levels you desire so that you can effectively avoid issues like overheating, and downtime of your equipment. What this means is that you do not have to worry about losing your income because devices are down.

These are but a few of the features of the Hive OS that can make your mining less complicated and easier.
Let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of the Hive OS

Advantages of Hive OS

  • It is very easy to use.
  • You can mine for free when you use the Hiveon pool.
  • All mining activities can easily be controlled, monitored, and managed remotely.
  • There is free access to workers like the GPUs and ASICs.
  • There is an easy switch between miners and algorithms.
  • You get smart notifications through discord and telegram. This helps to put your mind at ease.
  • It has an automated reset of hashrate drops.
  • There are preset overclock settings made available.

Disadvantages  of Hive OS

  • Unless you are mining on Hiveon Pool, setting up a 2nd rig is not free.
  • The setup for your mining rig is fully separate, it cannot run concurrently on Windows.

How to Mine Crypto Using Windows

Mining crypto on Windows is quite simple;

  1. Install a supported Windows OS version on a computer
  2. Select the most optimal settings for maximum performance
  3. Determine the coin you intend to mine
  4. Set up and run the software or batch file (.BAT file) for the cryptocurrency you want to mine and pick the pool you will be mining with and you are good to go.

When you aren’t using the GPU Rig you can easily run your miner in the background and then shut it off when you want to do other activities like gaming or editing videos.

You can learn more about mining on Windows by watching the YouTube video below. This will break down what you need to do and how to do it perfectly.

Windows are best for small-scale operators who are not mining on a large scale. This gives them an easy platform to mine. There are no complications and no holding back. Windows, however, will not be the greatest operating system to use when you intend to mine on a large scale.

Windows Mining

Windows becomes harder to operate as you start having more than one mining rig which practically includes adding multiple GPUs. It is strongly advised that if you want to run multiple GPUs and set up more than one rig, you should use an operating system that is specifically meant for mining cryptocurrency such as Hive OS.

Mining with Windows has its own advantages and disadvantages, let’s take a look at them.

Advantages of Windows

  • You can easily set it up on your current personal computer.
  • It is the best for a small number of GPUs
  • It is very easy to switch on and off.

Disadvantages  of Windows

  • There is no remote access with Windows. Unlike dedicated operating systems like Hive OS which allow remote access, Windows offers nothing like that.
  • Windows is unable to manage multiple rigs from one interface. Where in dedicated operating systems like Hive OS, you can easily manage different rigs using just an account dashboard, you cannot do the same with Windows.
  • You have to manually download mining software updates. Windows does not automatically update your mining software.
  • You have to manually update your GPUs.
  • Windows allows you to link only up to 12 GPUs before you are unable to anymore. Even this 12 might not run as smoothly as using an operating system dedicated to cryptocurrency mining.

Main Differences Between Hive OS and Windows

The main differences between the Hive OS and the Windows are highlighted as follows;

Operation

Hive OS is the perfect platform for miners with multiple rigs to perfectly set up their GPUs without having to worry about overload, overheating and every other related issue. Windows on the other hand cannot handle as many GPUs and do not have the capacity to allow management of these rigs from one dashboard.

Features

Windows do not have the features that large-scale mining needs while Hive OS has great features to make mining easier for its users.

Scale of Operation

How large or how small will decide if you will be able to mine effectively with Windows or not. There is a limit to how many rigs you can have on Windows before it becomes a hassle.  Hive OS on the other hand allows small-scale and large-scale operations without any limitation.

Conclusion

When it comes to mining, Hive OS offers a better deal for miners than Windows. However, Windows is quite easy to run and if you are not planning large-scale operations then you can certainly use Windows for your mining.
